At the farthest reach of the archipelago, the Crescent Islands arc like a moon over sapphire seas. The same volcanic storm that scarred Airovale three centuries ago tore through these shores — yet the ash it left behind made the soil unnaturally rich. Where lava once ran, terraced wineries and farmland now flourish, veined beneath by seams of gold and copper. Settlers here are naturalists who rebuke heavy industry, favoring vine and harvest over foundry smoke.
The Crescents lie such an immense distance from the rest of the archipelago that every zeppelin crossing arrives with its holds stripped bare, desperate for provisions after the long journey. Laborers come to work the copper caves, and before the return voyage they restock on wine, grain, and supplies — a demand that has built a boom economy for traders working the island's perimeter.
That same remoteness draws those who prefer to go unseen. The Crescent Islands shelter outcasts and thieves who value concealment above all, and miners arriving to work the copper seams often fall prey to their villainy — robbed outright, or lured into taverns where, for the right price, anything can be had.
Above it all looms the legend of Mahala. Three hundred years ago she was a farm girl caught in the great eruption, her body burned and disfigured — and the grimaces of those who once knew her proved a crueler wound than the fire itself. In desperation she prayed to the darkness for her beauty restored, and a mysterious stranger answered, granting her wish in exchange for one binding vow: to guard a hidden cache of temple gold, forever. Centuries of that bargain have swelled her power into something far darker.
Mahala now commands Aelmir, a storm once free to wander the clouds, bound by her sorcery into a predator of any airship or vessel that dares approach. Compasses twist in the Crescents' magnetic seas, storms break from clear skies, and false lights lure ships onto jagged reefs — Aelmir's warning to any who would test the guardian of the gold.
Begin the crossing in Episode 2, and follow the temple's shadow — and Mahala's wrath — in Episode 3.
