Thalos

Elder of the Fae of Canyon Myst

  • Father of Kira
  • Keeper of the old rule
  • Voice of the Law of Exchange

Who He Is

Thalos is the elder who speaks for the fae of Canyon Myst, and the oldest person anyone on the island can name. His hair and beard are white, his dragonfly-shaped wings have yellowed a little with age, and the centuries have bent his back until he is slighter than the fae who escort him. None of it makes him frail. His eyes are bright, his presence fills a clearing, and when he walks out of the forest alone to meet a stranded crew, every aeronaut at the fire falls silent.

He is dutiful by habit and secretive by necessity. He keeps the old rule of the island because someone must, and he is gentler than the rule asks him to be. He is also a father, and the daughter who inherited her late mother’s stubbornness, Kira, tests that gentleness more than any stranger could. Wise, weary and quietly funny, Thalos has outlived a great deal, and how he carries it is the heart of his story.

First Meeting: Chapter 6, The Law of Exchange

The crew of the Nereid has barely made camp on Canyon Myst when the forest begins to hum, a sound like birdsong carried on the wind. Thalos steps out of the vines alone, leaving his escort at the tree line, and takes the captain’s hands in both of his. When he lets go, Captain Von Holt’s guarded smile has given way to a nod of real respect.

That night he tells the castaways about the island as it was long ago, and smoke curls between his hands into pictures of fairies and mountains of fire. At dawn he leads them to the caves, offers fire-stone for their ship and game for their journey, and asks them to take only what they need. The island, he says, keeps count of the rest. One handshake at the fire lasts a heartbeat longer than the others, and it is Aden’s.

Thalos and the Law of Exchange

If the Law of Exchange has a voice on Canyon Myst, it is his. Thalos is the one who calls the crew to account for what they have been gathering, and who explains the rule beneath the island: every gift has its price, every gain asks a loss, and time is the coin that settles most accounts. He explains it without a threat. He has no need of one. He has watched the ledger balance itself for longer than anyone alive.

It is also a rule he lives under, not only above it. The peace he keeps was paid for, and not every payment on that account was his to choose. What the Law has already taken from him, and what it may still ask, is the question his chapters keep circling. The Magic page lists the saga’s clearest examples at work: see The Law in Action.

Thalos and Kira

Kira is the one person on the island Thalos cannot simply instruct. In Chapter 7 he gives each of the crew’s hunters a fae guardian and hands his own daughter to Aden, knowing exactly how she will take it. He knows her resistance well. Her mother had it too.

Their story grows tender as it grows dangerous. When the island turns against Aden, Kira goes to her father, not as a princess but as a daughter with a request that will cost him. He answers with something about his own past that she never expected to hear.

The Keeper and His Book

Thalos is also the island’s memory. In the fae palace he keeps an ancient library, and the book of magic open before him in his portrait is the most precious thing in it, its pages said to date from the days when only fae lived on Canyon Myst. How he came to carry it, and what it cost him, is a story he tells in his own time.

He is a teacher, too. In the last chapters he is the one who explains the portal beneath Canyon Myst to the two people who will need it. If you would rather hear him in his own voice, Ask the Keeper on the Magic page.

His World

  • His daughter: Kira. The fae princess of Canyon Myst, headstrong like her mother, and promised in marriage to keep the pact.
  • The castaway: Aden. The young aeronaut whose handshake he holds a moment longer.
  • The captain: Captain Von Holt. The first of the crew he greets, and the one he guides to the caves.
  • The village leader: Barra. Proud and quick-tempered, and the man the pact has promised his daughter to.
  • His home: Canyon Myst and Sibhruion. The cliff village where humans and fae share an uneasy peace, and the hidden palace where he holds court and keeps his library.
  • The rule over all of it: the Law of Exchange. Every choice on the island has a price, and time is the currency.

Airovale — Frequently Asked Questions About the Book

Is the Airovale ebook the same story as the paperback or audiobook?

Yes — the story content is identical across all three formats. The only difference is the chapter illustrations, which appear in the ebook and paperback but not the audiobook.

Is Airovale worth reading if I already watched the episodes?

Absolutely. The video episodes present a glimpse of the scenery set to the soundtrack's emotional journey, while the book is where the characters' thoughts and dialogue come through — the full interior experience of the story.

Is Airovale appropriate for teens?

Airovale is appropriate for teens ages 16+. The content touches on mature themes including dueling, the penalty of death, greed, immortality, and coming-of-age young adult romance.

How much romance content is in Airovale?

The romance in Airovale is written at a young adult level, with no graphic content beyond a few kisses. It centers on the two main characters as their journey to a forbidden ruin reveals ancient secrets about the island they inhabit, and their relationship grows into love and a decision to be together.

Is there a content warning or spice level for Airovale?

No warning needed. Airovale is a romantic adventure story, safe for readers ages 16 and up, with no graphic moments beyond a kiss.

Is Airovale a series or a standalone book?

Airovale is a series. The first book introduces the story, and additional books — two or more to complete the arc — are currently in development.

Is there a comparable story to Airovale?

Not exactly. Steampunk fantasy with time travel exists, and fantasy with fae exists, but few stories combine both. The closest comparisons are Carnival Row (Amazon Prime Video) or The Anubis Gates (Tim Powers) — though Airovale is a wholly original fantasy world with no historical setting.

Is Airovale a book or a movie?

Primarily, Airovale is a story told through three lenses: book, video, and music. The website and companion channel (Roku TV) present short cinematic episodes alongside a complete original soundtrack, while the book is the deepest way to experience the full story — the center of the Airovale experience.
