Coming Home

Airovale · Episode Four · By Jef Gray

After catastrophe, battered zeppelins limp back into Airovale, hulls torn and engines coughing — but alive. The city gathers at the docks in mingled relief and dread as Elara counts the returning ships, her heart sinking as she tallies fewer vessels than departed.

Mira rushes forward to embrace Kael, gratitude eclipsing grief as strangers press close to thank him as rescuer. Families reunite in tearful embraces. Orphans are claimed by aunts and uncles. Small gestures transform into priceless moments — pearls clasped around wrists, trinkets shared between survivors, children held tight.

Yet silence hangs heavy for those still waiting at the docks, their cries punctuating the joy like cracks in glass. The quartermaster lights his pipe, smoke curling upward like a benediction, and his parable returns with new weight: "We pay for life with time." The words settle over the crowd like falling ash.

Survivors discover they were already rich — in family, in breath, in each other. Mourners count the true cost in empty chairs and silent rooms. Every voyage is an exchange not of coin but of lives. This is Airovale, where homecoming carries the weight of all who didn't return.
